 Section Vacancies

General Information

Applications are invited for 2 PhD open positions and 2 Research Grant open position

The ISIP40 group, active in the DIBE department in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Genoa has focused its attention mostly on:

  1. Multidimensional Signal/Video Processing
  2. Multisensor Data Fusion
  3. Bio-inspired adaptive and evolving Pattern Recognition methods for Analysis and Decision
  4. Cognitive Distributed Systems for Telecommunications and Physical Security

Open Positions for Ph.D. (Dottorato di Ricerca)

2 positions (3 years) starting in 2011; expiration date for first level applications: August 1st, 2010

Research Areas:

  • Video processing within embodied multi-sensor cognitive artificial systems

The proposed PhD involves the study of problems mainly related to understanding of complex scenes from multisensor networks: focus will be on data association and state estimation methods for joint shape/color/position object tracking from multicamera data.

Activities will be oriented to address the use of developed methods within bio-inspired cognitive artificial systems for physical security and telecommunications.

Possibility will be open during the PhD to join on going funded research projects when available within the joint labs ISIP40 has with industries (e.g Technoaware, Telecom, ligurian industrial district SIIT).

  • Learning within distributed Cognitive Radio networks

The proposed PhD involves the study of cognitive radio networks under the viewpoint of designing bio-inspired learning approaches that allow adaptive methods for analysis and decision to evolve under the environmental operating conditions.

Focus will be on signal processing methods used at physical level telecommunications to both analyze (e.g. adaptive mode identification, MISM methods) and decision making (e.g. adaptive MIMO beamforming techniques) within an embodied radio framework.

Distributed estimation and decision methods will be studied within the context of application of CR to telecommunication systems using advanced wide band modulation techniques like OFDM, MC-CDMA, CDMA in mobile multi-antenna scenarios.

Possibility will be open during the PhD to join on going funded research projects when available within the joint labs ISIP40 has with industries (e.g Technoaware, Telecom, ligurian industrial district SIIT).

Applications:

Applications are invited for 2 PhD open positions, starting between the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 with ISIP40 research group (www.isip40.it) of the Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE), University of Genova – Genova (ITALY).

Requirements:

  1. Laurea Vecchio Ordinamento or Laurea Specialistica degree for Italian applicants in one of the following fields (or another relate field); Master of Science or equivalent degree for applicants from abroad:
    1. Telecommunication Engineering
    2. Electronic Engineering
    3. Information Engineering
    4. IT
    5. Computer Science (or Laurea degree in Informatica)
  1. Basic knowledge in the following topics:
    1. Signal Processing (applicants for Radio field )
    2. Communication Systems (applicants for Radio field )
    3. Pattern Recognition (applicants for both fields)
    4. Image/Video Processing (applicants for Video field)
  1. English knowledge

Deadline for applying:

The interested applicants please apply not later than August 1st, 2010.

How to apply?

The application is divided into two phases.

In the first phase the interested applicants should send their complete C.V. and two recommendation letters to Professor Carlo Regazzoni, e-mail: carlo@dibe.unige.it

Depending on the availability of candidates whose CV fits with requirements, a position will be asked for competition in the PhD call to be opened around August 2010 at Genoa University

An intermediate grant will be provided for candidates who are successful at the end of the first phase. Success in the first phase does not give any right for the following phase and the final admission.

In the second phase, applicants whose CV fits with requirements will be encouraged and advised to present an application for the official admission competition.

Candidates will have to take admission written and oral examination with a inter/university commission in dates to be communicated (around October/November 2010) to obtain the PhD position

PhD economic conditions

The research grant consists of about 14Keuro/year

Intermediate grant for applicants approved at the first stage

In case of acceptance of candidates to the second phase, a all-including 5Keuros grant will be offered by the ISIP40 group for a 4 months direct temporary collaboration contract on a research project to be defined from September 1st, 2010 to December 31st, 2010.

This grant will allow reciprocal knowledge for the candidate and the research group as well as it will allow the candidate to participate to the admission exams.

Travel and lodging expenses are included in the 5keuros grant for people from outside Italy.

Applicants whose CV fits with requirements will be in every case encouraged and advised to present an official application for the official admission competition even in case they cannot be available for the intermediate grant.

Notes:

  1. A complete C.V. must contain at least the education degrees and the related information, experiences (both academic and non-academic), projects, list of publications, and every other things you think can be useful
  2. If you have not graduated yet, provide some information about the probable graduation date.
  3. If you have some publications, you can also send some of the important ones together with your CV.
  4. You can also send any other information that you think can be useful and effective for your profile.
